The Wine Palate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2023 Jacks Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) pops from the glass with lively notes of cassis, red currant jelly, and potpourri, plus hints of chocolate box, pencil lead, and cardamom. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm backbone of grainy tannins and a lively line supporting the taut, muscular black fruit, finishing long and earthy."

Tasting notes

Our 2023 Jack’s Masterpiece is characteristically powerful and layered on the nose with effusive notes of blackberry, spice, wet rock and a hint of dark cocoa. The palate is taut, dense and layered with blackberry flavor, notes of graphite and well-structured oak in the background. The intense and lengthy finish is full of fine-grained, polished tannin. This is an incredible, age-worthy vintage of this wine.

Wine Facts

Jack’s is blended at the same time as Kathryn Hall, with different components being selected for the stylistic goal of the wine. Our Jack’s Masterpiece will typically come from many vineyard sources and appellations, but tends to be dominated by hillside fruit. The goal here is dark black fruit, power, chewy tannin, and a focused palate. The blend can be described as having blue and black fruits on the nose – blackberry, and black cherry with hints of wet stone or pencil lead. The palate is dark and brooding with dense tannin and structure.

Vintage Notes

The 2023 growing season was all about patience. A very long, wet winter replenished the soils and filled our reservoirs. Cooler spring weather delayed budbreak and the start of the growing season by several weeks. Late spring saw moderate warmth and led to substantial canopy growth, as well as a healthy crop load on the vines. Mild, warm temperatures created perfect ripening conditions throughout the summer and early fall. The longer hang time allowed the fruit to reach optimum ripeness, and resulted in a superb vintage that is fresh, full of flavor, with great balance and fruit density.
