Responsibility is one of our core values. It guides how we farm our vineyards, operate our wineries, develop our buildings, and engage with our communities. Through sustainable farming practices, LEED®-certified facilities, and a commitment to operating HALL, WALT, and BACA with integrity, we continuously seek innovative ways to turn our values into action.
As a family-owned company, we make decisions with the future in mind. We strive to maintain healthy, beautiful environments for our employees, neighbors, guests, and future generations by making sustainability and eco-conscious initiatives a priority across our vineyards, wineries, and hospitality spaces.
Our People
Our commitment to responsibility begins with our team. We invest in innovative environmental and social sustainability programs that combine green business practices with corporate responsibility.
To support community engagement, every employee receives 40 hours of paid volunteer time annually to contribute to charitable organizations and causes that matter to them.
Our Buildings
WALT wines are produced at HALL Napa Valley in St. Helena, home to some of the wine industry's most environmentally innovative facilities.
HALL earned LEED® Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for both its St. Helena Hospitality Center and Production Facility. In 2009, the winery became the first LEED® Gold-certified winery in California for its fully sustainable production facility. In 2014, the property's state-of-the-art fermentation facility and hospitality center earned a second LEED® Gold Certification.
LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the nation's leading benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.
Key sustainability initiatives at HALL Napa Valley include:
- Recycling office waste and utilizing 100% recycled paper whenever possible across HALL Family Wines facilities, tasting rooms, and offices.
- Recycling 100% of grey water generated through winemaking, hospitality, and office operations for vineyard irrigation and landscaping.
- Generating renewable energy through nearly 1.3 acres of solar panels.
- Utilizing state-of-the-art ultraviolet light sanitation systems to clean fermentation tanks, significantly reducing water consumption throughout the winery.
By integrating sustainable practices across our people, vineyards, and facilities, we remain committed to protecting the land, conserving resources, and ensuring a thriving future for generations to come.
Our Vineyards
Sustainable farming is at the heart of everything we do. HALL Family Wines' estate vineyards are certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), an organization with rigorous standards for environmentally responsible farming, business practices, and community stewardship.
In March 2017, WALT's three estate vineyards achieved CSWA certification as part of Sonoma County Winegrowers' "Sonoma Sustainable" initiative, a groundbreaking effort to make Sonoma County the first 100% certified sustainable wine region in the United States.
Today, our sustainably certified estate vineyards include:
Napa Valley: WALT Ranch, Sacrashe, Bergfeld, Hardester, Beller, Rainin, Dellar-Friedkin, Cook
Sonoma Coast: Bob's Ranch
Sta. Rita Hills: Clos Pepe
Anderson Valley: The Corners and Donnelly Creek
Dry Creek Valley: BACA Estate
In addition, two vineyards—Sacrashe and Bergfeld—are certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF).
Our vineyard teams utilize advanced vine water-status monitoring technology to optimize irrigation practices, ensuring water is used efficiently and only when vines reach critical moisture thresholds.
We are also proud to play an active leadership role within the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. In December 2017, Kathryn Hall was elected to the CSWA Board of Directors. The nonprofit organization, founded by the Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers, advances sustainable winegrowing through education, research, outreach, and industry partnerships.
